Excuses, Excuses

Just wanted you all to know that blogging may be light this week, as Sparkles Diamond will be making her appearance on Wednesday, January 9.

We've decided to schedule an induction, rather than wait for her to make up her mind, because our last baby (now four-year-old Connor) came rather quickly. I was dilated five centimeters a week before his due date, and he ended up being born 45 minutes after we got to the hospital. That was cutting it a little too close for my husband, who really thought he might end up delivering his son in the back of the Durango.

And personally, I'd rather get to the hospital in time for some pain medication this time. (Read: the blessed epidural.) It was somewhat of a moot point for Connor's delivery, since the rural hospital near us at the time didn't offer epidurals. But now? I'm back in civilization, and I'd like to avail myself of its benefits.

I plan to take my laptop to the hospital because I'm addicted I want to be able to share my joy as soon as Sparkles arrives on Wednesday. And who knows? Due to nervous energy the next few days, I may end up posting random stuff every hour on the hour. Because when I get nervous, I tend to chatter. (Again, my husband loudly proclaims, "AMEN!")

And truly, there's something a tad unnerving about scheduling childbirth. "So, what day next week would you like to get hit by a truck and feel the pain of a thousand red-hot suns?" "Ummm, how about Wednesday?"

Of course, my husband and I covet your prayers this week. We are thankful for God's blessings in letting many of the details of Sparkle's birth fall into place, not the least of which is the the arrival tomorrow night of my Mom who will take care of Connor and Natalie during our hospital stay. And for a wonderful doctor, who had compassion on my husband's fear that I will deliver a baby in our bathroom this time. And for epidurals, thank you Lord.

We're excited to meet this little girl and behold for ourselves God's creation -- His poiema, His work of art.

See you soon, my friends.

  1. Umm- NOT OFFER EPIDURALS? How rural do you have to be to not have epidurals? I'll keep your answer in mind, just in case I get married, and just in case I get pregnant and just in case I feel the desire to move to some far off and exotic location that DOESN'T OFFER EPIDURALS! Thank you very much, I was there for both of my nieces and my nephew's births, (or right outside the door- which is really close enough!) and I'm quite sure that an epidural is worth changing your living location for!

Best wishes on a speedy and epidural-ly delivery of Sparkles! See you back here soon with pictures!

  6. On January 12, 2002, I had a scheduled induction. My handsome son decided that he'd get started early . . . so I was actually in labor when we arrived at the hospital. We would have gone in sooner, but we were waiting until 7:30 a.m. to drop off my daughter at a friend's house. 'Cause I couldn't let my labor disturb their sleep! Still made it in time for an epidural!!!!!

I'll definitely be thinking about you and sending good wishes your way. Can't wait to see your pics of Sparkles!

  7. Oh yeah, the epidural is a must. And loved your comment about what day would you like to schedule the pain! But there is absolutely nothing as miraculous and exhilarating as the birth of a precious child, is there. Definitely worth it all.

Although I could have done without those first couple of post-partum hours and days. . . . :-)

  10. I know what you mean. I scheduled both my girls' inductions. It did seem really strange to be able to pick out their birthdays.

How exciting! Good luck with the delivery!

  14. I used to be an OB nurse and honest to goodness I had a woman who actually named her baby "Sparkle Tee Diamond"!!!!

    ====:-0

I tried to talk her out of it but she wouldn't hear it. That's the name she picked and that's the name she was sticking with.

So when I read your baby's "name", I had to laugh.

I had a woman name her baby "Pepsi Cola" too. One woman wanted to name her baby "Vagina" because she thought it was a pretty sounding name (she never heard the word before.. *sigh*) but happily I talked her OUT Of that one!!!

There's a girl out there in the world, who's about 20 years old now, who owes me BIG time! :)

God bless you with a safe birth and may all go well~ Pearl

  15. What - you think childbirth is an acceptable excuse for NOT BLOGGING? :-)

Enjoy your epidural. Take a fan. If they use pitocin for the induction, you're gonna be a bit warm.

Can't wait to meet *Sparkles*! Praying for all of you...

  16. Ok. No epidural FOUR years ago? Where did you live?

Know that you are in so many prayers. I hope that it is an easy delivery and all goes well back at your house with your kids. Miss Sparkles will just be so precious!! I can't wait to hear all about her.

And not that I'm questioning your decision-making or anything (though you did deliver at a hospital sans epidural)but if you could've scheduled for Thursday then I could've shared a birthday with Sparkles :)

When you are not too busy, you know, delivering and all...look for all the great blogging material that you can find. There is probably no better opportunity.

  23. Light blogging only for a week?

Hey, I had three scheduled inductions, and all went well. It's nice being able to know when you're going and to make arrangements for the other kids.

May you enjoy a good night's rest!

    Keep us posted!

  24. Good Luck Kelly. I've had the "baby came too fast for an epidural" delivery and can empathize with your position! I too induced my 3rd so that we wouldn't have him on the floorboards of the van! Everything went great including my FABULOUS (and in my opinion, essential) epidural. My prayers are with you.

  26. Kelly,

I pray you have a quick, pain-free delivery with ALL the epidural type medication the hospital will legally allow you to have. Cuz you deserve it, after living in Timbuktoo darn far out to offer epidurals. Sheesh!

Seriously, I pray ALL goes well with you. I actually woke up yesterday morning with you on my heart and prayed for you. Isn't that amazing and strange at the same time?

Can't WAIT to see pix of Sparkles Diamond.

I am heading home the evening of your new daughter's birthday, so I'll pray for you on the plane.
